Choices: Education Transitions and Key Considerations for Young Adults with Disabilities

What are the aims of the Choices Course?

Participants will develop an understanding of the education transitions and key considerations for young adults with disabilities. The course will facilitate participants to:

  • Explain responsibilities, rights and entitlements of people with disabilities.
  • Understand entitlements, funding streams, and roles and responsibilities in the transition from primary to secondary education.
  • Outline factors to consider when profiling students strengths and weaknesses.
  • Identify factors to consider when making subject choices prior to Leaving Certificate.
  • Outline the options available at post secondary level in training, further and higher education.
  • Manage goals and expectations.
  • Outline the process of educational needs assessment which all students with disabilities will be asked to complete in consultation with disability support/access officers.

Who should participate on the Choices Course?

This course is aimed at parents, young adults, 2nd level resource teachers, guidance counsellors, 2nd level and primary principals and resource staff who want to:

  • Understand the issues facing young people with disabilities, including learning support needs when making educational transitions.
  • Make informed choices at times of educational transition.
  • Get the best out of the education on offer and enable young adults to reach their full potential.

What is the course duration?

The course is one day in duration and is conducted as a workshop. Active participation on the course is encouraged to maximise learning opportunities and to enable participants to share and learn from prior experiences.

How much does the course cost and what resources are provided?

The cost of the course is €249.00 per participant. This includes expert tuition, course materials, learner support, lunch and refreshments. Please contact us for in-house costs.
