Walter McGuire - Artlink

Artlink, Roslyn Park CollegeMy name is Walter, I’m 40 years of age and from Dundrum in Dublin. I’m currently studying ArtLink at National Learning Network’s Roslyn Park College. Like many other students here at the college, I’ve had a varied career. I guess that’s what gives Roslyn Park College such a vibrant atmosphere. We all have different life experiences and have travelled our own path to arrive here at Roslyn Park College. That uniqueness is celebrated here.
I’ve always been creative but, while I was younger, I didn’t think of it as a basis for a future career. I went to University and studied economics before working in finance for a few years. In my spare time I developed a love of bronze casting, something which I was eventually to teach in a leading art college before experiencing some mental health challenges which resulted in me taking some time out.
I heard about the ArtLink course from a friend who was attending the Performing Arts course here at Roslyn Park College. I knew instantly that the course was for me. The ArtLink room is such a colourful and inspiring environment. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to explore new areas of creativity such as drawing, painting and plaster work under the guidance of our instructor, Paula. The level of training and support here is very high. It’s no wonder that the ArtLink course is so highly regarded by the country’s leading art colleges. Many former students have gone on to build careers in the arts – either as artists or as art teachers.
Teaching is where I see my future. I love being creative and really want to share this love of art with others. The ArtLink course is a hugely important step on this journey. I’ve learned so much here and have been given the time and space to explore what I want from life. I’m really grateful to Roslyn Park College and am so excited to see what the future will hold.
