- Seamus Heavin - Employer Based Training
Seamus Heavin recently completed the Employer Based Training (EBT) programme with National Learning Network in Athlone. Having previously done the Fresh Start programme in the centre which he describes as “a settling in course, or a beginners course”, Seamus felt ready for the EBT course which focused on getting him back into the workforce.
He says, “For me it was all about exams. It helped me to gain experience in the workforce, with the hope that I would get a full-time job eventually. I did a QQI Level 5 award as well as doing work experience 3 days a week. For me it was a major step up from the QQI Level 4 that I completed on Fresh Start. I learnt alot of IT skills. I applied for a job with OCS, an English based retail company operating here in Ireland. I was fortunate to get a job with them as a stock checker. Getting the job took time and effort and co-operation from other people (instructors). I just didn’t get it on my own.”
Explaining the benefits of the both courses, Seamus says, “I was able to gain confidence. I was also able to socialise better as a result. I have more independence. I am more confident, especially in dealing with problems. The instructors helped me outside of class hours with advice, help, and guidance on a personal level. When I contacted instructors them they were there for me."
